River Street

The Savannah Waterfront Association will welcome the National Air, Sea & Space Foundation and the Spanish tall ship El Galeon Andalucia to historic River Street on Thursday, October 23, 2014. The Tall ship will be visiting Savannah for a 10 day stay during its five month tour of the east coast. The Sail to Sunny 16th Century Ship Tour 2014 will take the ship from Ocean City, MD to sunny Fort Lauderdale, FL making nine ports-of call in five states along the way. The 170-foot long, 500 ton ship is the only Galeon class vessel sailing today. Five of the seven decks will be available for the public to tour. It carries an all-Spanish crew of 25 sailors, several of which will welcome visitors aboard when they tour this one-of-a-kind vessel.

El Galeon Andalucia was featured in the NBC series Crossbones starring John Malkovich as the legendary pirate Blackbeard which aired this summer. The ship spent three months in Puerto Rico where the series was filmed. "El Galeon will bring the spirit of discovery and exploration to over two hundred thousand visitors on its Sail to Sunny Fort Lauderdale," said Bryan Lilley, head of the National Air, Sea & Space Foundation. "When you step the ship it’s like traveling back in time 500 years to experience for yourself what it was like to explore the new World," he continued.

The ship will be open for public tours daily from 10 am – 6 pm starting on Friday, October 24 and continuing through Sunday, November 2. The Foundation will also be inviting school groups the El Galeon for complimentary tours and the chance to participate in the ‘Future Explorers Education Program,’ part of its non-profit mission to educate youth in Air, Sea and Space. "When the ship sails into a port it’s like bringing a hands on learning experience on the scale of a field trip to [a port city during the 16th Century] to the community," Lilley said. "The foundation is proud to be able to offer such an opportunity to public school students free of charge," he continued. The Savannah Waterfront Association will also be hosting two days of exhibits on Rousakis Riverfront Plaza celebrating local maritime history for the school groups to enjoy.

In addition to the tours, the Savannah Waterfront Association and the Air, Sea and Space Foundation will host several unique opportunities to tap into your inner pirate or immerse yourself in Spanish culture aboard the El Galeon. The ship will also pay homage to one of the most haunted cities when it is transformed into a haunted pirate ship over Halloween weekend. "This is one of the most amazing ships I have ever seen and Savannah will have the opportunity to experience it in a different way each night. We will have events for both kids and adults, so whatever level of party or pirate you want, you will have a choice," said Carrie Bligh, Executive Director of the Savannah Waterfront Association. The haunted pirate ship will take place Thursday, October 30 through Saturday, November 1. "We are very excited to scare the wits out of folks during the haunted pirate ship," added Bligh. Ticket information and a detailed schedule will be available online soon for visitors and locals.

Wing Cafe. Each bar will be offering drink specials each for $4 or less and available exclusively to participants.
On top of the killer specials, each crawler will receive a signature goblet, koozie, plenty of swag from each bar
and sponsor, an official score card to mark your progress, free entry to all participating bars, and will enjoy the
after party at 51 Degrees!

Long considered a "songwriter's songwriter," John Prine is a rare talent who writes the songs other songwriters would sell their souls for. Evidence of this is the long list of songwriters who have recorded gems from his extensive catalog, including Johnny Cash, Bonnie Raitt, the Everly Brothers, John Denver, Ben Harper, and many others. With immeasurable accolades, including two Grammys and the distinction of being one of the few songwriters honored by the Library of Congress and US Poet Laureate, Prine is more than a musician…he is an American treasure.
