We all know the feeling. You’re on vacation, and wish you had known about that one item you could have brought to make the trip perfect. When you’re visiting new places, it’s hard to know what to expect — and what you should bring. We want to make sure you’re seasoned like a Savannah local before you ever step foot in the city, so you know exactly what to throw in your bag for your trip. Read on to find out how to pack for the perfect stay in Savannah.

    Walking Shoes

Ask anyone who’s been to Savannah, and they’ll tell you the best way to enjoy the city is by walking. In fact, Savannah was rated by Walking Magazine as one of the 10 Best Walking Cities in America. There are over 22 scenic squares in Savannah, and we recommend seeing them all.

You’ll want to see Savannah’s iconic River Street, where you can admire the architecture of the downtown historic district. But since this street is made of 200-year-old cobblestone, you’ll need to bring some comfortable shoes or else your feet may give out on you before your sense of adventure does.

Once you’re done exploring the Savannah streets, take a walk down to City Market in the heart of downtown, where you can visit shops, sit down for dinner and enjoy the bustling nightlife.

    A Cup Koozie

While you’re doing all that walking, you’re going to work up quite a thirst. Luckily, Savannah is one of the nation’s few open-carry cities, and bringing your beverage of choice with you isn’t just allowed, it’s encouraged! Grab a drink at Congress Street Social Club, The Distillery or any of the bars in Savannah’s historic district and take your cup to go.

The bars in Savannah offer to-go cups if you want to take your drink with you, and we recommend bringing a cup koozie to keep your drink icy cold as you explore. Just remember to stay within the bounds of the historic district, from River Street to Jones Street and Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard to West Broad Street.

    Water Bottle

Speaking of drinks, it’s important to stay hydrated during the summer months in a southern town like Savannah. Although winter, fall and spring are generally mild, the temperature and humidity in the summer can catch you off guard if you’re not ready. The last thing you want is dehydration to spoil your trip!

You’ll definitely want to bring a water bottle if you’re interested in exploring some of the historic sites surrounding the city. That includes the famous Wormsloe Historic Site, where you can explore the miles of trails and see the iconic driveway lined by live oaks and Spanish Moss. You’ll work up quite the sweat though, so keep your water bottle handy!

    Ghost-hunting Gear

I know, I know, you may not have a paranormal tracker sitting around, but if there’s one place you’re going to want to brush off that joke gift you got at Christmas one year, it’s Savannah.

With Native American burial grounds, a history of bloody battles, a yellow fever epidemic and more, there’s a lot of haunting to be done in Savannah. So, it’s not surprising that Savannah is commonly named as one of the Most Haunted Cities in America.

For the adventure-seeking family, you can explore the city’s haunted past on the family-friendly Grave Tales Ghost Tour. Or, enjoy a hair-raising night out while exploring the city’s haunted restaurants and bars on the Ghost City Pub Crawl.

A Copy of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil

Known simply as “The Book” to many locals, there’s no better accompaniment for the bookworm on a trip to Savannah than John Berendt’s best-selling book, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, which is set in Savannah.

Stop by the Mercer House where the infamous murder took place, or spend a day taking a tour of all of the book’s notable locations around the city. Whether it’s your first time reading the story or you just want to reread this classic, it’s worth taking the book along to relive the story in the setting where the tale takes place.

    A Bathing Suit

Once you’ve tired your legs touring around Savannah’s historic sites, you’ll probably be ready for a little rest and relaxation. Bring your bathing suit and hop on over to Tybee Island to enjoy a day at the beach. And if you still haven’t had your fill of adventure, Tybee Island offers kayaking, biking and camping for those looking to enjoy the great outdoors.

While you’re on the island, we recommend taking the family to explore the historic Tybee Island Light Station built in 1736, and grabbing a bite to eat at CoCo’s Sunset Grille.

Now that you know what to pack, it’s time to book your vacation!
