    Tenebrae

    Event Details

The Cathedral Choir will chant Thomas Tallis’s Lamentations, penitential Psalms, and Allegri’s famous Miserere for the Office of Tenebrae on this darkest of nights. The gradual extinction of all lights in the Cathedral symbolizes the temporary triumph of the prince of darkness over the Light of the World, and the loud noise, or strepitus, at the conclusion of the office suggests the earthquake described in the Passion narratives. A single candle left burning is the symbol and promise of Christ’s triumph over death and darkness. Tenebrae concludes with Gregorio Allegri’s famous Miserere.

This is a service of worship, therefore it is free and everyone is welcome to attend.
