Did you know that Georgia has recently become the number one filming location in the world? As soon as you set foot in sunny Savannah, you’ll see why this beautiful city has been the backdrop for so many beloved films. If you’ve visited before, you probably already know that Forrest Gump’s famous bench was located in Savannah’s Chippewa Square – now on display at the Savannah Visitor’s Center — but the city has played an important role in so many more films since then. Here’s our list of must-see movies to watch before your next visit!

    Now and Then (1995)

This coming-of-age classic starring Christina Ricci and Gaby Hoffman is the perfect pick for summertime sleepover parties, sure to charm tweens and adults alike. Filmed in Savannah over twenty years ago, the movie depicts the life of four pre-teen girls in small-town suburbia in 1970.

    Forces of Nature (1999)

Sharp-eyed viewers of this rom-com starring Sandra Bullock and Ben Affleck will pick out plenty of Savannah locations including the Talmadge Bridge, Wright Square, and the Savannah airport.

    The Last Song (2010)

If you’re fond of sunsets and long walks on the beach, then this teen romance starring a young Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth is for you! Shot on the beautiful shores of Tybee Island, The Last Song made Miley fall in love with the area. According to Explore Georgia, she donated to the Tybee Marine Science Center Sea Turtle Project after filming.

    Magic Mike XXL (2015)

If you’re planning your bachelorette party in Savannah, may we suggest a viewing of Magic Mike XXL as part of the itinerary? This love letter to the wild world of male stripping was filmed all over Savannah and Tybee Island, including Savannah Technical College, Wormsloe Historic Site, and the Savannah International Trade and Convention Center. Peel your eyes off Channing Tatum’s six pack and see how many Savannah locations you can spot!

The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water (2015)

Who lives in a pineapple under the sea? SpongeBob Squarepants! And where is that pineapple under the sea? Tybee Island, of course! This movie mash-up of animation and live action was filmed in various locations throughout downtown Savannah and Tybee Island, including the Tybee Pier and Pavilion.

    Baywatch (2017)

Let’s be honest – the plot of this summer blockbuster is secondary to the star-studded cast (including Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Zac Efron) and the gorgeous scenery. Multiple scenes were shot on Tybee’s beautiful waterfront, including a jet-ski chase!

    Gemini Man (2019)

One of the most recent films to be shot in and around Savannah is Gemini Man – an upcoming Will Smith sci-fi/action flick directed by Ang Lee.  The city has been the site of a lot of filming this year, with production in Thunderbolt, Isle of Hope, and Johnson Square.

We can’t wait to catch another glimpse of Savannah on the big screen in 2019!
