When you think of St. Patrick’s Day, you may picture the streets of Boston, New York or even Dublin. But one of the biggest St. Patrick’s Day celebrations in the world actually takes place right here in the Hostess City. With a parade that’s continually run since 1824, Savannah is the place where you can experience a true taste of Ireland in the heart of the South. We’ve put together a list of some of the top St. Patrick’s Day events for you to enjoy this March.

Greening of the Fountain and Irish Heritage Dance — March 9

Kick off the St. Patrick’s Day season at the annual greening of the fountain. Each year, Savannah’s fountains each go green in commemoration of the major celebration, and it all gets started at Forsyth Park where the first fountain is dyed. Watch as waters run green then pop over to Alee Shriner’s Temple for a taste of traditional Irish culture at the Irish Heritage Dance. At this coat-and-tie event, you’ll be amazed by the Irish Heritage Society’s preservation of traditional Irish dances.

William Jasper Green Ceremony — March 16

Before the reveling and parties take place, military members, government officials and more gather to commemorate the sacrifices of Irish American military members throughout history at the William Jasper Green Ceremony. The event is named for Irish American Revolutionary War hero Sgt. William Jasper who rescued the South Carolina state flag during the Battle of Sullivan’s Island and was later mortally wounded during the Siege of Savannah. Come witness this ceremony and celebrate the Irish American’s who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

St. Patrick’s Day Festival March 16–17

In a city known for festivals and parties, there’s no bigger celebration than St. Patty’s Day. The festivities start on Friday, as vendors and bands take to the streets with merchandise and music to create a truly unique experience. Pick up your $10 wristband to enjoy your green beer anywhere within the festival area as you explore all there is to see. River Street and City Market are two of the most popular hubs of activity with giveaways, a food court, live music and more. Just don’t forget to wear green unless you want to be pinched!

    St Patrick’s Day Parade — March 17

One of the largest St. Patrick’s Day gatherings in the world, the annual parade has marched through Savannah’s streets for over 190 years, and now more than 400,000 descend upon Savannah city each March for the event, which more than quadruples the city’s population. The parade kicks off at 10:15 AM on Saturday, and will commence rain or shine. Be sure to line up early to ensure a good view of the floats, performers, cars and more. Wherever you stand, you’re sure to be within earshot of the traditional Irish bagpipe bands, but if you want to guarantee a good spot, you can also buy tickets for the parade bleachers.
