It’s a common problem. You go on vacation, take a few days off from the gym, and end up ruining your routine. A lot of times, it’s not that you don’t want to break a sweat, it’s just that you don’t know enough about the city to get to the best outdoor activities and exercise spots.

Luckily, Savannah is one of the most active cities in the U.S. at any time of year. So, if you’re looking to shape up or stay at the top of your game during your time in Savannah, pack your Fitbit, grab a water bottle and read on for the best ways to break a sweat in Savannah.

    Forsyth Park

    Run from square to square

There’s nothing quite like taking in a new city on your own two feet. Savannah is a runner’s paradise with beautiful urban streets to explore, and scenic natural trails as well. Running through downtown, you’ll be able to appreciate the iconic architecture that you might miss while driving in a car. And a steady jog helps you cover a lot more ground than a casual stroll, so you’ll be able to see all 22 of this city’s historic squares.

If you’re looking for a quick jog, head down to Forsyth Park for views of the large fountain, live oaks and azaleas. To see more of the city, try this run through historic downtown Savannah to enjoy beautiful squares, magnolias and homes. As you’re exploring, keep an eye out for restaurants you want to try, like The Olde Pink House or shops you want to visit at City Market. And if you want to cool off after your jog, we won’t judge you for stopping by Leopold’s Ice Cream on the way home.

Take it in on two wheels

If running isn’t your thing, hop on a bike to work your muscles while pushing your pedals between Savannah’s most popular locations. Cyclists will be happy to know that Savannah has earned Bicycle-Friendly Community status, and new bike lanes and bike racks can be found throughout the city.

If you’re looking for a leisurely ride, bike tours are a great way to see the sites and learn about the city while getting a light workout. Bring the whole family for a guided tour, or rent your own bikes to explore at your own pace.

    Strike a pose

Let’s face it, we all face the eternal struggle of our minds telling us we should work out, and our hearts (and stomachs) telling us to explore Savannah’s popular restaurants, bars and breweries. Well, thanks to Southbound Brewing Company, you don’t have to choose between the two. Check out Pints and Poses — a free 60-minute yoga session held inside the brewery. See if there’s session scheduled for your visit, and stop by to enjoy some suds after your stretches.

    Take it off road

Savannah’s downtown streets have endless opportunities to explore, but if you’re looking for fewer stoplights and more scenery, there’s no better spot to see Savannah’s natural beauty than Mcqueen’s Island Trail. Perfect for outdoor activities, like a run, hike or bike ride, this six-mile trail follows the Savannah River and gives you an up-close look at Savannah’s marshland habitat and wildlife.

Go for a run in the early morning to be rewarded with stunning sunrise views and serene waters. After your workout, you can relax on one of the many park benches to enjoy the peaceful setting and cool breeze coming across the water.

    Get a round

For the golf lover, Savannah offers idyllic courses perfect for catching a round before going out to explore the city, so be sure to pack your clubs when you visit.

Tee off at The Club at Savannah Harbor for a challenging round with distinct views of historic downtown Savannah. Designed by Sam Snead and Bob Cupp, this public course is a hit with amateurs and enthusiasts alike, and it’s one of the highest rated in Georgia — ranked by Golfweek as the state’s #3 Course You Can Play.

Looking for fun for the whole family? Try one of the miniature golf courses around town to keep the kids entertained while you work on your short game.

And if you have a day to get out of the city, you’re only a short drive from Hilton Head Island, and some of the best golf courses in the country. Test your game on the same greens as the pros at the renowned Harbour Town Golf Links, ranked ninth on Golf.com’s Top 100 Courses You Can Play list.

Now that you know all of the best workout spots, it’s time to book your vacation!
