    17th Annual Lawrence Lecture by Dr. Kirsten Pai Buick

    Join us for the prestigious 2024 Jacob and Gwendolyn Lawrence Lecture at the Jepson Center in Savannah, Georgia, on September 19th at 6pm. Presented by Telfair Museums and Telfair’s Friends of African American Arts, this year’s lecture features Dr. Kirsten Pai Buick in conjunction with the exhibition “Emancipation: The Unfinished Project of Liberation.”

    About the Lecture: Dr. Kirsten Pai Buick, Chair of the Department of Africana Studies at the University of New Mexico, will deliver a compelling lecture titled “A Controlled Burn: Discursive Emancipation, Abolitionism, and the Consolidation of ‘Race’ in Visual Culture.” This lecture is based on her essay in the “Emancipation” catalogue, exploring themes of emancipation, abolitionism, and the visual culture of the British diaspora and African American art.

     

    Speaker’s Background: Dr. Buick is a distinguished scholar specializing in the visual and material culture of the British diaspora and African American art. She is the author of “Child of the Fire: Mary Edmonia Lewis and the Problem of Art History’s Black and Indian Subject” and is currently working on her second book, “In Authenticity: ‘Kara Walker’ and the Eidetics of Racism.” Her contributions to art history have been recognized with awards such as the High Museum of Art’s David C. Driskell Prize for American Art and the College Art Association’s Distinguished Scholar Award.
